My experience of building a cattery
Building a cattery is a rewarding endeavour that offers both comfort for feline residents and peace of mind for their owners. In this story, we will delve into the process of constructing a cattery from start to finish, sharing insights on designing the layout, selecting materials, and creating a safe and stimulating environment for our cats. Whether you are a dedicated cat lover looking to provide a sanctuary for your furry friends or considering starting a cattery, this article will provide valuable information and practical tips based on first-hand experience DIY. After few mounts of reading how to do it we decided to start.
Building outdoor cattery will cost significantly less than buying a cattery house from a store. Working DIY is money saving for sure and I could make the design however I want. DIY means I didn’t have to buy prefabricated model that might be cheaper and quicker to fall apart in time.
Whilst our cats are indoor, I wanted to give them the freedom to enjoy the outdoors as well. Therefore creating a safe cat run becomes an essential part of our garden design and for freedom all garden is cat proofed with 1m mesh wide.
We decided to build the cattery back of the garage, to be easily accessed by the boy, attached to cat run and garage. Building a secure and comfortable living quarters for our boy and queens would be a greater importance for our futures plans.
Different breeders keep their stud cats differently. Most breeders keep their stud cats outdoors due to their unsociable urine spraying habits, where as a small number keep their stud cats indoors in one room all the time or at least give them extended time in the house with them.
Our boy outdoor stud cat will have his own enclosure outside of the house, with his own insulated, heated room attach to garage converted on play room for queen who want to stay not only in house but as weal on garage with exit to a big cut run enclosure. This will prevents any accidental mating with the queens which are next to him on the cat run and garage. Of course, keeping a stud cat all the time this way means that he is not part of day to day life in the house and extra time outside with him is needed or time to time to be take in on house.
So, you’re thinking of building a cattery? That’s perfect! Creating a special space for your feline friends can be a rewarding project. Let’s dive into the world of catteries and discover what it takes to build one that will make your cats purr with delight. A well-designed cattery is not just a fancy cat playground; it’s a sanctuary for your furry companions. A thoughtfully planned cattery provides your cats with a safe and stimulating environment that promotes their physical and mental well-being.
Building your own cattery comes with a bunch of benefits. Not only do you get to customize it to suit your cats’ needs and your personal style, but you also save some serious kitty cash compared to buying a pre-made one. Plus, the satisfaction of creating a space where your cats can lounge, play, and snooze is priceless.
When it comes to designing the layout of your cattery, it’s all about creating a space that your cats will love to explore and inhabit. Let’s talk about how to make your cattery the cat’s meow. Before grabbing your hammer and nails, think about the size of your cattery. Make sure there’s plenty of spaces on each rooms for your cats to move around, climb, scratch, and nap without feeling cramped. Consider the number of cats you have or plan to have to determine the right capacity for your cattery. For us is for one boy.
Just like humans, cats appreciate a breath of fresh air and some natural light. Ensure your cattery has proper ventilation to keep the air fresh and clean, and enough natural light to mimic the outdoors. Cats love basking in the sun and watching birds, so give them the opportunity to do so in their cosy space.
Building a cattery requires the right materials and tools to ensure a sturdy and safe structure for your beloved felines. Let’s take a look at what you need to get the job done right. When it comes to materials for your cattery, opt for sturdy and easy-to-clean options. Consider using materials such as wood, PVC panels, wire mesh, and waterproof fabrics that are durable and cat-friendly. Remember, cats can be quite playful and, let’s face it, a bit destructive at times.
Gather your arsenal of tools because it’s time to build! You’ll need essentials like a hammer, nails, screws, a saw, measuring tape, and a level to ensure your cattery is constructed with precision. Don’t forget your creative flair and a can-do attitude – they’re the most important tools in your kit. Now that you have your plans, materials, and tools ready, it’s time to roll up your sleeves and start constructing your cattery. Let’s get building!
Before you start building, prepare the site for construction. Clear the area, make sure the ground is level, and double-check your measurements. A solid waterproof concrete foundation with DPM is key to a stable and secure cattery that will stand the test of time – and rambunctious cats.
With your site prepped, it’s time to bring your cattery to life. Build the framework of your cattery, ensuring it’s sturdy and well-supported. Our cattery will be fully insulated with 50mm thermal insulation on a stud wall frame of 75x100mm, door same insulated, ensuring a comfortable and energy-efficient space. The insulation helps keep heating costs down while providing a warm and cosy environment, making it ideal for any weather conditions. The cattery roof is pent design and slopes away to the rear to let rain water run off, it’s made from external 22mm OSB and 11mm OSB inside with roll wood and thermal insulation between. Well insulated roof is covered with a heavy quality roofing membrane for durability and total weatherproofing. Entrance of run cat is used galvanized hardware for security and a double padlock.
There are strict regulations set out by DEFRA, as to the required size for a cat pen. Our cattery house and run assembled together measures 3000mm long x 1800mm wide. The framework for the house and run is smooth planed redwood timber, pressure treated and all joints are secured with corners brackets. The cattery is secure and shielded from the wind.
Both areas of cattery the room and cat run, they have play and relax area, shelving’s steps and stairs.
We add shelves, scratching posts, and cosy corners to create a cat paradise. Get creative and think like a cat – what would make this space irresistible to them? We add solar light with sensor, Wi-Fi infrared heaters with smart thermostat, wall-mounted cat scratcher, litter trays, water fountain, ceramic balls for food, CCTVs for live surveillance and security inside and outside.
Cattery will not only make your cats happy but also bring a sense of accomplishment and joy to your DIY adventures. When it comes to building a cattery, creating a comfortable living space for our feline friends is key. Furnishing the cattery with cat-friendly features is essential to ensure our whiskered companions feel right at home. From cosy beds to scratching posts, providing a variety of options can cater to different cat preferences. Designing resting and sleeping areas thoughtfully can offer cats a sense of security and relaxation.
Safety should be a top priority when constructing a cattery. Ensuring secure enclosures and escape-proofing measures are in place can prevent any Houdini-like escapes. Addressing health and hygiene concerns is also crucial. Implementing proper ventilation, cleaning routines, and waste disposal systems can help maintain a hygienic environment for both cats and humans alike.
Cats are natural explorers and hunters, so incorporating enrichment and play areas in the cattery can keep them mentally and physically stimulated. Climbing structures, toys, and interactive spaces can provide entertainment and exercise for our curious companions. Designing these areas creatively can enhance the overall well-being of the cats in our care.
Once the cattery is up and running, regular cleaning and sanitization practices are essential to keep the space hygienic and odour-free. Monitoring cat behaviour and health in the cattery can help identify any issues early on. Keeping an eye on food consumption, litter box usage, and general well-being can ensure our furry residents are happy and healthy in their home away from home. Embarking on the journey of building a cattery is not just about constructing a shelter, but about creating a home where cats can thrive and be happy. By paying attention to design, safety, and comfort, you can ensure that your cattery is a haven for feline companions. As you continue to care for and enjoy the company of cats in your cattery, may these insights guide you in providing the best possible environment for your beloved pets.
